‘All day’– Liverpool’s rivalry with Manchester United will always be bigger than Man City ‘hatred’– it’s historic

Liverpool may be challenging for the title yet again with Manchester City – but their ‘hatred’ for United is what makes the pair greater rivals.

For the last decade, the Reds and Citizens have regularly competed for top honours.

The Merseyside giants have only managed to pip the Etihad outfit once in this period, compared to the six won by City.

Just one point separates the two teams this season with ten games left to play following the 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Their meetings have become the most highly-anticipated fixture in the Premier League, with the clubs not only England’s best sides, but two of Europe’s elite.

Liverpool have reached the Champions League final three times in the last six years – winning once – with City ending their wait for the European Cup last season following their 2021 final defeat.

Still, their intense rivalry is yet to eclipse the north west derby between Liverpool and United derby, despite their gulf in class with the latter sitting in sixth spot.

No side has won more English league titles than the Red Devils, who have scooped 20 championships – one more than Liverpool.

That is despite their last success coming in 2013, with the club enjoying a disastrous decade which has seen them win just four major honours.

In contrast, Liverpool have won each trophy at least once besides the Europa League, which they are favourites to take home this campaign.

Their rivalry will be renewed this weekend when United welcome Liverpool to the Theatre of Dreams in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Man United Fanzone fans are more confident heading into this weekend’s FA Cup Clash. A sizeable 61 per cent of United fans think they’ll stop Klopp’s men from doing the quadruple and win the FA Cup themselves, whilst only 58 per cent of Liverpool fans think they will win the FA Cup in the boss’ final season.

Erik ten Hag‘s side know victory will stop Jurgen Klopp‘s men from completing a potential historic quadruple.

Few people have proven to be a thorn in United’s side more than talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy, who scored three winning goals at Old Trafford during his seven-year Liverpool spell.

And the 46-ear-old has rubbished talk that City have become Liverpool’s biggest rivals, as he stressed the club’s history with United is the crucial factor.

Speaking on White and Jordan, he was asked whether Liverpool’s rivalry with City is becoming bigger than their one with United, to which he said: “No.

“I think there’s been some bigger games in recent years because of them fighting the title out and the games have become more pivotal and monumental in the moment.

“But the rivalry of Liverpool and Man United will always be greater than Liverpool Man City, irrelevant of what’s going on in the league.

“There’s more hatred there. There’s more rivalry, it goes back decades that.

“The Liverpool-City thing would have to grow a little bit more. But, it’s a bigger game for Liverpool in many ways.”

Even United forward Marcus Rashford agrees, as when quizzed by club legend Gary Neville on the Overlap on who he despises more, he stated: “Liverpool.

“I don’t like either of them, but I dislike them more. It is Liverpool, all day.”

But with every title City scoops, hatred for them will continue to grow – though they will have to win ten more to get level with Liverpool’s haul of 19.

And with United to face Liverpool in the league next month, a victory for the former could see Klopp’s men miss out to Pep Guardiola yet again.
